Non-physician treatments: what exactly is being made cheaper?
The price gap between identically named procedures usually comes not from the product, but from who ends up carrying the risk.
You will see the same procedure offered at very different prices on social media. Sometimes the gap really is negotiation. More often it comes from one of three places: the product, the person performing it, and preparedness for complications.
An injection is a medical procedure
Filler and botulinum toxin treatments are medical procedures that only physicians may perform. Treatments carried out in beauty salons, hotel rooms or at home are unlawful. This is not a formality: these procedures require knowledge of facial vascular anatomy and the ability to manage complications.
Three sources of the price difference
The product. Unlicensed products of unclear origin can be sourced far below the cost of licensed ones. With a product that has no packaging and no lot number, there is no way to know what it contains. A significant share of serious, delayed inflammatory reactions is associated with such products.
The person performing it. A non-physician injector works for less and cannot intervene when a complication develops.
Preparedness. Keeping hyaluronidase on site, having an emergency protocol, using sterile single-use materials — all of this costs money. The easiest way to cut the price is to skip those items, and from the outside you cannot see that they have been skipped.
The rare but real risk
Vascular occlusion — product blocking a blood vessel — is very rare in filler treatment. When it does occur it can cause tissue loss and, where vessels around the eye are involved, vision loss. What determines the outcome is how quickly the problem is recognised and treated.
That is why two questions come before price:
- Will the person treating me recognise this if it happens?
- Is the medication needed to treat it in this building right now?
If something goes wrong after a procedure
Pain in the treated area that is more severe than expected and increasing, blanching or mottling of the skin, any change in vision, or a widespread rash all need urgent assessment. Do not wait for these to pass. If you cannot reach the place that treated you, go to the nearest emergency department and tell them exactly what was injected.
In short
In medical aesthetics a large part of what you pay is not for the result but for the result being safe. The cheaper option rarely means you receive less product. It usually means the risk has been transferred to you.
