What is salmon DNA and what does it do? PN, PDRN, serums and injections

Salmon DNA does not add volume; it targets skin quality such as hydration, texture and elasticity. A physician on PN versus PDRN, serums versus injections, sessions and the evidence.

"Salmon DNA" has recently become a familiar name among treatments that support skin quality. The name sparks curiosity, but what really matters is what the product contains and how it is delivered to the skin. In short, this treatment is less about adding volume to the face and more about skin quality: hydration, texture, elasticity and the look of fine lines. However, not every "salmon DNA" product is the same, and a serum and an injection are not interchangeable.

What is salmon DNA?

In everyday use, salmon DNA is a general name for products containing PN and PDRN. PN stands for polynucleotide and PDRN for polydeoxyribonucleotide. Both consist of purified DNA fragments, but their molecular length, their concentration and their purpose in a product may differ.

This distinction is not just a technical detail. The structure of the product affects which skin layer it is placed in and the result that can be expected. So an assessment should look beyond the name "salmon DNA": whether the product contains PN or PDRN, its concentration, its registration and instructions for use, the area to be treated and the person's needs.

What does salmon DNA do?

The main aim of a salmon DNA treatment is not to change the shape of the face but to help the skin look healthier and more rested. The areas most often assessed in clinical studies are:

  • Supporting skin hydration and elasticity
  • Reducing fine lines
  • Improving skin quality in thin-skinned areas such as around the eyes
  • A smoother, fresher and more even-looking skin

Expectations need to be set correctly here. Salmon DNA does not add noticeable volume like a filler, does not reduce the movement of the muscles of expression like botulinum toxin, and does not "lift" the face on its own. The aim is a slowly developing, natural-looking improvement in skin texture.

What is PDRN, and is it the same as PN?

PDRN and PN are DNA-based biopolymers from the same family, but they are not exact synonyms. Current scientific publications emphasise that PN consists of longer DNA chains while PDRN consists of relatively shorter fragments. This difference can affect how the products behave in tissue and what they are used for.

The practical point for a patient is this: the terms "PDRN", "PN", "polynucleotide" and "salmon DNA" seen on social media or on packaging do not describe one standard treatment. Which product has been chosen, and why, should be explained during the consultation.

Is a salmon DNA serum the same as a salmon DNA injection?

No. The names are similar, but the route of use and the tissue level they target are different. Serums and creams are applied to the skin surface; their effect depends on the formula, the amount of active ingredient, the delivery system and the skin barrier. In injection treatments, the product is placed in small doses into the skin plane chosen by the physician.

So there is no single answer to "I use a serum; do I still need injections?" Good home care supports the skin barrier and daily moisture balance. A clinical treatment has a different aim and a different depth. One is not a stronger version of the other; they are different tools.

How is a salmon DNA "shot" or mesotherapy performed?

Although it is popularly called a salmon DNA "shot" or "vaccine", this treatment is not a vaccine in the usual sense. Depending on what the skin needs, the product can be delivered through many small injections to areas such as the face, around the eyes, the neck or the décolleté. The skin is assessed beforehand and a suitable product and plan are chosen; a topical anaesthetic may be used for comfort where needed.

Afterwards, small bumps, redness, tenderness or bruising can appear at the needle entry points. These are mostly temporary. The treatment area, dose, interval between sessions and total number of sessions vary with the product and the person's skin. One-size-fits-all protocols seen online should therefore not be taken as right for everyone.

When do results show?

With salmon DNA the result does not usually appear overnight. The skin may look hydrated and fresh in the first days, but the change in tissue quality progresses more gradually. In a study of the eye area published in 2026, the highest satisfaction was reported around the third month after two sessions, and improvement was followed up to the sixth month. That said, the study was observational; results may not come at the same pace or to the same degree for everyone.

When photographs from different dates are compared, the light, angle, make-up and shooting distance should be the same. The most reliable comparison is made with photographs taken under standard conditions and against the person's own starting point.

How many sessions are needed and how long does the effect last?

Plans of two or three sessions are common in the literature, but that number is not a universal rule. The content of the product, the area treated, age, skin quality, sun exposure, smoking and accompanying procedures can all change the plan. At the follow-up visit, the skin's response decides whether a maintenance session is needed.

Expressing durability as a single number of months can be misleading, because what is being measured is not the volume of a filler but the change in hydration, elasticity, fine lines and overall skin appearance. How long the result lasts depends on personal factors and the care routine.

Who might salmon DNA be suitable for?

People who notice dryness, dullness, fine lines, surface irregularity or loss of elasticity in their skin can come for an assessment. It can be one of the options particularly for those who want to focus on skin quality while keeping a natural look.

Even so, it may not be the right procedure for everyone who asks. An active infection or cold sore, pregnancy or breastfeeding, a bleeding tendency, current medication, known allergies and existing conditions should be shared with the physician beforehand. Suitability should be decided according to the official instructions of the product used and a personal medical assessment.

Why does the cost of salmon DNA vary?

The cost depends on the brand and content of the product used, the syringe volume, the concentration, the area to be treated, the amount of product needed and the number of sessions planned. That is why "how much is one session?" on its own can make for a misleading comparison.

The better question is: which product, to which area, in what amount and within what kind of treatment plan? Once those four points are clear after the consultation, the cost can be discussed transparently as well.

What should you check before having salmon DNA?

  • That the treatment is carried out by a physician in appropriate clinical conditions
  • That the name, content, batch details and intended use of the product are explained
  • That the expected result is framed as supporting skin quality, not adding volume
  • That possible temporary effects and aftercare are explained in advance
  • That photographs are assessed with standard light and angle

What does the scientific evidence say?

The data on polynucleotide treatments are promising, but the level of evidence is still developing. In a randomised, double-blind, split-face study of 27 people, PN and non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid around the eyes showed similar overall improvement; some advantages were reported on the PN side in elasticity, hydration, roughness and pore measurements. No serious adverse events were seen.

A systematic review published in 2026, covering a total of 183 people across seven randomised trials, reported positive results in skin rejuvenation and wound healing. However, because the studies are small, the protocols differ from one another and the measurement methods vary, larger studies are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.

In short, salmon DNA can be a valuable option for supporting skin quality in the right person; but it is not a cure-all, does not give everyone the same result and does not single-handedly replace the answer to every sign of ageing. The most natural result comes where the right indication meets realistic expectations and a personal plan.
