Step by step
Assessment
We discuss the current shape of your lips, how they sit with the rest of your face, and what you hope for. If you have had filler before, sharing the product name and date helps planning. The amount and session plan are decided from this assessment.
The procedure
The area is cleansed and numbing cream is applied. The filler is placed in small, controlled amounts into the lips and along the lip border. The procedure takes about 30 minutes.
The first days
The lips look fuller straight away, but the first look is not the result. Swelling, tenderness and bruising can occur; the final result settles within 10 days. Judging volume or symmetry before then is misleading.
Additional session
Depending on lip shape, the target volume may be given over two, or occasionally three, sessions rather than all at once. This lets each stage settle before the next addition is planned.
Risks and side effects
The following can occur with this treatment. Most are temporary; the rare and serious ones are noted separately.
- Swelling — expected, easing over a few days
- Local bleeding and bruising
- Acute vascular occlusion — the most serious and most feared risk. It can result from the product compressing a vessel or entering it (embolisation). It requires emergency management, which is why the procedure must be performed by a physician.
Frequently asked questions
How long does lip filler take to settle?
Lip filler settles in about 10 days. Straight after the procedure the lips look fuller, but part of that is swelling. Swelling and tenderness ease over the following days. Volume and symmetry are assessed once the filler has settled.
How long does lip filler last?
Around 12 months on average. Hyaluronic acid is gradually absorbed by the body, and because the lips move a great deal, absorption is faster than in deeper support areas. The product used and individual factors affect this.
Why is it not done in a single session?
Giving all the volume at once makes it hard to judge the result through the swelling and raises the risk of overfilling. Dividing the amount over two, or occasionally three, sessions lets each stage settle before the next addition is planned.
I have had filler before. Can I still have it?
In most cases yes, but the existing filler is assessed first. If previous filler has migrated into the muscle, new filler is not placed. Knowing the product name, the date, and any problem you had makes planning easier.
